Swanson® broth is made with simple, real ingredients. We don’t add MSG or artificial flavors or preservatives. We carefully select ingredients to create a high quality broth with perfectly balanced flavors to enhance any recipe – from soups to sides.

KEY INGREDIENTS

Chicken Stock

We start with chickens farm-raised in the U.S. Our chicken stock is made as you would at home, only on a much larger scale. Chicken with bones is cooked to perfection in water which is then concentrated to create a rich, robust flavor.

Beef Stock

We make our stock the traditional way, by cooking bones in water. A special steaming process ensures the stock is clear with a robust flavor. The beef is sourced from cattle regions in the U.S.

Vegetables

We add carrots, celery and onions - a traditional mirepoix mix - to add a delicious flavor to the broth. The finely chopped vegetables, which are mainly sourced in North America, are simmered in the broth.

INGREDIENTS FOR FLAVOR


Chicken fat

We add a small amount of fat to create an authentic flavor in our best-selling Chicken Broth.

Dehydrated garlic

Dried and ground garlic are used to add flavor.

Dehydrated onions

We use dried onions as a base flavor.

Natural flavorings and extracts

We use natural flavors to add a depth of taste. These are mostly concentrated extracts derived from herbs, spices, vegetables, beef or poultry depending on the variety.

Yeast extract

This is a natural flavor derived from yeast which adds a savory taste it contains a small amount of naturally occurring MSG.

ORGANIC & NON-GMO

The ingredients we use in Swanson broths are not from genetically modified crops.

There are two organic Swanson broths:
– 100% natural Swanson Certified Organic Chicken broth made from all-natural, organic vegetables and free-range chicken raised with no antibiotics
– 100% natural Swanson Certified Organic Vegetable broth made from vegetables, grown according to organic standards

 

WHO MAKES THE BROTH

 

We use ingredients mainly sourced in North America.

Swanson recipes are created by our chefs in our kitchens and produced in our plants in North America including Ohio, Texas, North Carolina and Toronto, Canada.

 

PACKAGING

Swanson cartons contain paperboard, thin layers of plastic and a layer of aluminum foil. Combined, these materials form a robust carton which keeps the broth from spoiling. The paperboard in our cartons is from sustainable sources.

Swanson broth is also available in a recyclable plastic bottle.

We also make broth in steel cans. These cans are recyclable and contain on average around 30% recycled material. The inside of these cans are coated with a thin layer of plastic to separate the broth and the metal, which keeps the broth safe and preserves its nutritional value. Often this lining contains a substance called bisphenol A or BPA. We are currently transitioning to non-BPA can coatings which are made from acrylic or polyester. We expect this to be complete by mid-2017.
